Easington set to bring the classroom to the pool

A new initiative launched by the District of Easington Everyday Swim project and the Positive Futures Scheme will take traditional classroom based lessons to the pool to encourage the development of young people’s maths and science skills.

Pool based sessions start on the 3rd November at Peterlee Leisure Centre and will include stroke development, mini polo, snorkelling and rookie lifeguard sessions, each delivered with numeracy and literacy skills tasks incorporated into the activity.

Youngsters will take part in water based maths tasks such as counting strokes per length, taking pool measurements, timing activities, and various numerical games in this new learning environment.

Before the scheme kicks off Olympic Gold medalist Duncan Goodhew, the Everyday Swim National Ambassador will visit Peterlee Leisure Centre to meet the young people participating and provide motivational advice as well as getting in the pool.

Lisa Denham, Positive Futures Coordinator, said "this is a great opportunity for young people to develop personal skills whilst achieving academic subject areas, outside of the usual educational setting. It encompasses elements of numeracy and literacy skills, communication and teamwork with a focus on fun. I will also highlight the commitment and responsibilities of a lifeguard”.
